Event: G.I.R.L.S.: Girls In Real Life Situations

G.I.R.LS.: GIRLS IN REAL LIFE SITUATIONS

MARCH 7, 2012 - JUNE 6, 2012 (EVERY WEDNESDAY)

An intensive training program for girls aged 8 to 11 to strengthen their social and emotional competencies.

G.I.R.L.S. PROGRAM

Girls In Real Life Situations (G.I.R.L.S.), is a program specifically tailored to enhance the social and emotional development of girls.  In small groups, the session themes will cover a broad range of topics such as self-esteem, communication, stress, bullying, friendships and relationships.  Girls are taught effective problem-solving, social skills, empathy skills, assertiveness training, physical and emotional management skills, and coping strategies for use in everyday situations.

AN EVIDENCE-BASED CHILD TRAINING CURRICULUM

G.I.R.L.S. program is an evidence-based curriculum which utilises different modes of instruction. We aim to explore each program topic in a comprehensive and thorough way, through direct teaching, role-play, worksheets, and open discussion exercises. We follow the curriculum, but will maintain flexibility to cater to the individual needs of each participant. The classes will be facilitated by two masters level psychologists, maintaining a teacher-student ratio of 1:3 and ensuring that the program has maximal benefit for each individual.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

School-aged girls from 8 to 11 yrs. Girls with socio-emotional difficulties who may be struggling to handle transitions, and related life/social circumstances, who want to build competence in problem-solving, considering consequences, managing  emotions and frustration, maintaining focus, attending to social cues, expressing feelings and concerns in words, seeking attention in appropriate ways and persisting in challenging tasks.

WHY THE G.I.R.L.S. PROGRAM?

Relational aggression is an indirect form of aggression that intends to harm others through verbal and social means, such as gossiping, excluding, and spreading rumours. Relational aggression is used more commonly by girls than boys, and its use increases with age and as verbal skills develop.  Victims are more likely to exhibit symptoms of depression, anxiety, loneliness, and peer rejection.  However, early intervention can help to decrease the occurrence of relational aggression and build individuals’ resiliency to cope with it if and when it arises.
